Brim width
In Bambu Studio, the profile 0.20mm Standard @BBL A1 sets it to5 mm
How far the brim (a flat, one-layer band around the base) extends from the part. Wider, the part grips the plate better, but it uses more plastic and is harder to clean up.
How it works
The brim multiplies the area stuck to the plate without changing the part. A tower with a 2 cm wide base has very little grip; with a 5 mm brim around it, the stuck-down area almost triples.
In Bambu Studio, “Brim type” comes set to “Auto”, which works out the width and placement by itself; in that case this setting isn't used. This width applies when you choose a manual type, like “Outer brim only”. The “Brim-object gap” leaves a tiny space so the brim snaps off cleanly by hand.
When to change it
- A lighthouse or a tall, thin tower, or a figure that stands on points: 5–8 mm.
- An ABS, ASA or nylon box, materials that shrink and lift at the corners: 8–12 mm.
- PLA on a textured PEI plate with the bed at 55 °C: you almost never need it; leave the type on “Auto”.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| 0 | No brim; PLA on PEI, large bases |
| 3–5 mm | Standard when turned ondefault |
| 8–12 mm | Tall parts, materials that shrink |
Watch out for
- It leaves a lip on the base that you have to remove; on parts that fit together (lids, hinges), the lip gets in the way.
- If the part still comes loose with a brim, the problem is usually the first layer height, a dirty plate or the temperature, not the width.
