How it works

The last layer is printed in lines, and the order they go down in shows. With “Rectilinear”, the nozzle goes back and forth. At each turn it leaves a little extra plastic at the edge, and each new line presses against the previous one while it's still soft. The result is visible striping.

“Monotonic” fills the top moving steadily toward one side, each line laid right next to the previous one: no gap is ever left to be filled later from the other side, so the top comes out flat and even, with the same sheen across the whole face. “Monotonic line” (the default) does the same, but links the lines with short hops along the wall instead of long trips. “Global monotonic line” keeps the same direction even across separate areas of the same layer.

The rest are decorative: concentric rings, Hilbert curve, Archimedean chords or octagram spiral. They look nice on tops that show, but they take longer.

When to change it

• Almost any part, from a box to a bracket: leave “Monotonic line”.
• The lid of a round pill box or a planter, where straight striping looks out of place: “Concentric”.
• A coaster or a decorative plaque where you want the top face to have a pattern: “Hilbert Curve”, “Archimedean Chords” or “Octagram Spiral”.
• A grille or a lid with lots of holes, where the striping changes direction from one piece to the next: “Global monotonic line”.
