How the photo of each layer is taken for the video: as is (instant) or moving the toolhead aside and cleaning it on a tower afterwards (smooth). The timelapse itself is turned on when you send the print.
How it works
A timelapse is one photo per layer stitched into a video. On the A1, the bed moves to a fixed position before each photo in both modes. In “Instant”, the photo is taken as soon as the layer finishes; the pause lets a little plastic ooze out, which the slicer tries to hide in the infill.
In “Smooth”, the toolhead moves over to the purge chute for the photo and, on its way back, prints a piece of tower to get rid of what oozed. The video is cleaner and the part has no blobs, but a tower is generated even with a single color and the print takes longer.
When to change it
- A quick video to show how a keychain was made: Instant (default).
- A vase or a thin-walled part, where the ooze has no infill to hide in, or a polished video for social media: Smooth.
- If you're not recording, it doesn't matter: if the timelapse box isn't checked when sending, nothing happens.

Watch out for
- Smooth mode needs the prime tower enabled.
- The video length depends on how many layers the part has, not on print time: 1000 layers give about 33 s at 30 frames per second.

What Bambu Studio says
If smooth or instant mode is selected, a timelapse video will be generated for each print. After each layer is printed, a snapshot is taken with the chamber camera. All of these snapshots are composed into a timelapse video when printing completes. If smooth mode is selected, the toolhead will move to the excess chute after each layer is printed and then take a snapshot. Since the melt filament may leak from the nozzle during the process of taking a snapshot, prime tower is required for smooth mode to wipe nozzle.
