How many loops of plastic make up the shell of the part. More walls give more strength and more weight, without touching the infill.
How it works
Each loop is about 0.42 mm wide (the line width). With 2 walls the shell is about 0.85 mm thick; with 4, about 1.7 mm. In the program it's called “Wall loops”.
The strength of a printed part comes much more from the walls than from the infill. If you want something stronger, going from 2 to 4 walls pays off more than raising the infill from 15% to 50%, and it usually takes less time.
When to change it
- A decorative figurine or a prototype to check the shape: 2 is enough.
- A shelf bracket, a part that gets screwed together or that you'll sand: 3 or 4.
- A hook that will hold weight or a part with screws that cut their own way into the plastic: 4 to 6, so the screw bites into solid plastic.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| 2 | Decorative, prototypesdefault |
| 3 | Normal everyday parts |
| 4 | Load, screws, sanding |
| 5–6 | Heavy load; thin areas end up nearly solid |
Watch out for
- Each extra wall adds about the same amount of time; on small parts it's very noticeable.
- If an area of the model is thinner than all the walls put together, they don't fit and the program fills the gap as best it can: Classic leaves a gap or patches it in bits, and Arachne narrows the walls so they fit (see “Wall generator”). Check the preview.
