Top shell thickness
In Bambu Studio, the profile 0.20mm Standard @BBL A1 sets it to1.0 mm
The minimum thickness, in millimeters, of the solid layers on top. If the layers you asked for don't reach that thickness, the slicer adds more, so the top doesn't end up too thin with very low layers.
How it works
“Top shell layers” counts layers, not millimeters: 5 layers of 0.2 mm add up to 1 mm, but 5 layers of 0.08 mm are only 0.4 mm, and with that the infill shows through. This setting sets a floor in millimeters: if 5 layers don't reach 1 mm, layers are added until they do.
Whichever is larger wins: the number of layers or the thickness. At 0, the setting is turned off and only the layers count.
When to change it
- A figure printed with thin layers (0.08–0.12 mm) whose top comes out weak or shows the infill: raise it to 1 or 1.2 mm.
- The lid of a toolbox that has to take knocks: 1.5 mm.
- A quick prototype where you'd rather control the top by layer count alone: 0.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| 0 | Off; layer count decides |
| 1 | Default; guarantees 1 mm on topdefault |
| 1.5 | Very solid tops on functional parts |
Watch out for
- With 0.2 mm layers and 5 top layers you already have 1 mm: the default adds nothing. It only kicks in with thinner layers.
- It's grayed out if “Top shell layers” is 0.

What Bambu Studio says
The number of top solid layers is increased when slicing if the thickness calculated by top shell layers is thinner than this value. This can avoid having too thin shell when layer height is small. 0 means that this setting is disabled and thickness of top shell is absolutely determained by top shell layers
