When you paint a top face a different color with the paint tool, this sets how many layers down that color goes. It only matters in multicolor prints.
How it works
When you paint a surface with the color brush, coloring just the last layer isn't enough: with light filaments, the color underneath shows through. This setting carries the painted color several layers inward, like a thick coat of paint.
With 5 layers (the default on the A1), the color looks solid with almost any filament. More layers mean more filament changes and more purging, which is the plastic the printer throws away every time it switches colors.
When to change it
- A sign with white or yellow letters painted on a black base, and the black shows through: raise it to 6 or 8.
- A keychain with a name painted in a dark color on a light background: 3 is enough and you save purge.
- A part with lots of colored areas where purging drives up the time and the wasted plastic: lower it to 3.

Watch out for
- If you don't use several filaments or paint any areas, it does nothing.
- Every layer with two colors needs its own filament change and purge: print time climbs fast.
