Detect overhang wall

Measures how much of each wall line sits over thin air and prints it slower depending on how far it sticks out. That makes parts that stick out come out cleaner.

How it works

An overhang is a part that sticks out with nothing underneath. When a wall leans outward, each layer sticks out a little past the one below and part of the line is printed in the air. The further it sticks out, the more time the plastic needs to cool before the next pass pushes on it.

With this option, the program sorts each wall line by the percentage that's in the air and uses a different speed for each range. Those speeds are set in the Speed tab, under “Slow down for overhang” (10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). A line that's completely in the air runs at bridge speed. Turned off, everything runs at the normal wall speed.

When to change it

  • Almost always, leave it on: it comes that way from the factory and it's what makes the chin of a bust or the wing of an airplane come out well.
  • A part with straight walls, like a box or a cylinder: no need to turn it off; since nothing sticks out, it never slows down anywhere.

Watch out for

  • With “Smooth speed discontinuity area” turned on, speed changes between ranges happen gradually and don't leave marks.
  • In Bambu Studio this setting only shows up with developer mode turned on (in Preferences).

What Bambu Studio says

Detect the overhang percentage relative to line width and use different speed to print. For 100 percent overhang, bridge speed is used.
