Ironing speed

How fast the nozzle moves while ironing the surface. Slower smooths better; faster barely softens the plastic.

Not always visible. In Bambu Studio this setting only shows up when “Ironing Type” is not “No ironing”. See Ironing Type.

How it works

Ironing works because the hot nozzle passes over the ridges of the last layer and softens them. The slower it goes, the more time the heat has to work and the smoother the result.

The trade-off is that ironing a big lid takes a while. With lines 0.15 mm apart, a 50 × 50 mm lid is almost 17 meters of travel: about 9 minutes at 30 mm/s.

When to change it

  • A box lid that's still rough after ironing: lower it to 20 or 25 mm/s.
  • A large tray or sign where ironing blows up the print time: raise it to 40 or 50 mm/s and accept a slightly less refined finish.

50Faster; smooths less

Watch out for

  • Very slow and with very little plastic, the filament sits hot in the nozzle for too long: with PLA the risk of a clog goes up.
  • It only shows up if “Ironing Type” is not set to “No ironing”.
