Outer wall speed
How fast the visible face of the part is printed. Lowering it improves the finish more than any other speed, and it adds the least to the print time.
How it works
The outer wall is the only line you see and touch. At high speed the print head shakes after every corner and leaves ripples (“ghosting”), the plastic goes down less evenly and the sheen changes. That's why it runs slower than the inner walls (300 mm/s) and the infill (270 mm/s).
Since the outer wall is a small share of everything that gets printed, slowing it down barely lengthens the print: it's the cheapest way to improve the finish.
When to change it
- A figure to give as a gift, or a vase in silk or shiny filament: lower it to 100–150 mm/s.
- A prototype for testing dimensions, where the finish doesn't matter: raise it to 250 mm/s. Above that, with PLA the nozzle can't melt plastic fast enough and the printer trims the speed on its own.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| 100 | Best finish; silk and shiny filaments |
| 200 | Defaultdefault |
| 250 | Quick prototypes |
Watch out for
- The actual speed on each stretch is also capped by the filament's flow limit (21 mm³/s for PLA Basic) and by the minimum layer time needed for cooling: the printer may go slower than you ask.
- On overhangs (parts that stick out into the air), “Slow down for overhang” takes over, not this speed.
- So that speed changes don't show, the outer wall acceleration is also set separately.
