Initial layer density
How solid the first layer of the support or raft is, the one that sticks to the plate. Nearly solid (90%) grips well; very open can come loose halfway through the print.
How it works
The first layer of the support is its foundation: if it comes loose, everything on top falls. At 90%, the lines sit almost touching and grip the plate like the first layer of the part.
Lowering the density saves some plastic and time on very large supports, but every line you remove means a little less grip.
When to change it
- Most parts: the default 90%.
- A large part with support under its whole base (a helmet printed upside down) on a plate that grips very well: 60–70% to save material.
- Tall, thin supports that tip over (under a figure's raised arm): 90–100%.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| 90% | Defaultdefault |
| 60–70% | Savings on large supports |
| 100% | Maximum grip |
Watch out for
- It only affects the first layer; the rest of the support follows its own pattern and spacing.
- If the support comes loose from the plate, before raising this make sure the plate is clean: grease from your fingers costs more grip than any density.
