Support base pattern
The pattern inside the support (not the layer that touches the part): lines, grid, honeycomb, lightning or hollow. It changes how much it holds, how much plastic it uses and how hard it is to pull off.
How it works
The body of the support doesn't need to look nice: it only has to hold up the interface, the dense layer on top that touches the part. That's why its pattern is open. Normal supports use parallel lines (fast and easy to pull off), and tree supports are hollow, because the branches are already sturdy on their own.
“Rectilinear grid” and “Honeycomb” make it stiffer for very tall supports. “Lightning” cuts it down to a few branches that only grow toward the spots that need holding up: it uses the least plastic and is the weakest.
When to change it
- Almost always: “Default”; the slicer picks the pattern based on the support type.
- A tall figure with an outstretched arm, whose normal support is several centimeters tall and wobbles: “Rectilinear grid” or “Honeycomb”.
- A tree support in silk PLA, which is brittle and snaps hollow branches: “Rectilinear”.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| Default | Factory settingdefault |
| Rectilinear | Normal: fast and easy to pull off |
| Grid / Honeycomb | Tall, stable supports |
| Lightning | Least plastic |
| Hollow | Tree: outline only |
Watch out for
- The distance between lines is set separately, in “Base pattern spacing”; with honeycomb, that distance is the radius of each cell.
- The stiffer the pattern, the harder the support is to remove.
