Scarf seam

Turns the joint of each wall loop from a vertical cut into a ramp: the end rides up over the start and the seam nearly disappears.

Not always visible. In Bambu Studio this setting only shows up when “Override filament scarf seam setting” is on. See Override filament scarf seam setting.

How it works

A normal seam is a butt joint: the loop ends exactly where it started and the joint shows as a vertical line. With a scarf, the nozzle starts the loop lower than usual while laying down less plastic, and climbs little by little to the layer height. At the end, it runs back over the same ramp from above. The two ramps overlap and the joint is spread over several millimeters instead of being concentrated at one point.

“Contour” applies the scarf only to the part's outer wall. “Contour and hole” also applies it to the walls of holes.

In Bambu Studio this setting normally lives in the filament profile (Bambu PLAs come with “Contour”). In the process it only shows up if you turn on “Override filament scarf seam setting”, and then the process takes over.

When to change it

  • A vase, a cup or a figure's helmet, smooth and round, where the seam shows: “Contour”.
  • A hole where a shaft or a bearing fits and the seam mark gets in the way: “Contour and hole”.
  • A box with sharp corners: not needed, the seam already hides in the corner. “Smart scarf seam application” decides this on its own.

Watch out for

  • In the Spanish version of the program this scarf goes by several names (“cicatriz”, “Scarf”, “bufanda”): they're all the same thing.
  • The scarf lays down less plastic on the ramp: on overhangs (parts that stick out with nothing underneath) it may not bond well.
  • It adds slow moves on every layer: on parts with many loops, that adds up.
  • If the seam still looks bad with a scarf, calibrate pressure and retraction first.
