Ensure vertical shell thickness
On sloped faces, adds solid infill under each step so the shell is as thick as on a flat top. Without it, the infill shows through.
How it works
You ask for 5 solid layers on top and 3 on the bottom, and on a flat top you get them. But on a sloped face each layer sticks out a little past the one below: under that step there are only the walls of the layer below, and then hollow infill. In practice, the shell on that face is one layer thick, not five.
With this option the slicer checks every layer: if a stretch of shell doesn't reach the requested vertical thickness, it adds solid infill underneath until it does. “Partial” only does this where the shortfall is serious; “Enabled” does it everywhere.
When to change it
- A dome, a helmet or a part with large chamfers (edges cut at an angle), where the sloped face is visible: “Enabled”, the factory setting.
- A prototype for checking dimensions, where only time matters: “Partial” or “Disabled”.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| Disabled | Only walls under the steps |
| Partial | Solid infill only in the worst cases |
| Enabled | Full shell on every face (default)default |
Watch out for
- How much infill gets added depends on the top and bottom layers you ask for: with 8 layers on a very sloped part, almost the whole inside turns solid.
- If the preview shows solid infill where you didn't expect it, it almost always comes from here.
