Softening temperature

The temperature at which the material starts going soft. If the bed matches or exceeds it, on an enclosed printer it's best to open the door or remove the lid.

How it works

A plastic doesn't go from hard to liquid all at once: it softens first. PLA does at about 45 °C. If the air inside an enclosed printer gets that warm, the filament softens before it reaches the nozzle, deforms in the extruder and can clog it.

Bambu Studio compares this number with the bed temperature: when the bed is at this temperature or higher, it recommends opening the front door or removing the top glass.

When to change it

  • You don't change it: it's a property of the material, and Bambu sets it in every profile (PLA 45 °C, PETG 70 °C, TPU 30 °C).
  • You print PLA on an enclosed printer with the plate at 65 °C: open the door or remove the lid.

Watch out for

  • The A1 is open, with no door or lid: the warning barely affects it.
  • It's also a hint about where the part will live: a PLA bracket inside a car in the sun can bend.

What Bambu Studio says

The material softens at this temperature, so when the bed temperature is equal to or greater than it, it's highly recommended to open the front door and/or remove the upper glass to avoid cloggings.
