Avoid crossing walls

When the nozzle moves from one spot to another without releasing plastic, it goes around on the inside of the part instead of cutting across the outer wall. Fewer strings and fewer marks on the surface.

How it works

To get from one area of a layer to another, the nozzle moves without printing (a “travel” move). If that move crosses the outer wall, the drop that leaks out of the nozzle leaves a string or a mark right on the face you see.

With this option, the travel move follows the outline of the layer on the inside of the part and only leaves where there's no outer wall. It can only go around if the start and end points are both inside (or both outside) the wall; if one is inside and the other outside, there's no way around.

When to change it

  • A filament that drips (PETG, TPU, some shiny PLA) on a part with many separate areas in the same layer, like a miniature table (each leg is a separate area) or a crown with points: turn it on.
  • A solid part with a single area, like a cube or a coaster: it barely changes anything.

Watch out for

  • Detours make travel moves longer, so they add some time. “Avoid crossing wall - Max detour length” limits how much.
  • It only works within one layer of the same object; it doesn't detour between different objects.
