Overhang speed, 75 to 100%
How fast wall lines go when they hang out almost completely, without quite being a bridge. It's the slowest range: raising it saves time at the cost of worse overhangs.
How it works
With three quarters or more of the bead of plastic in the air, the line is held up by a thread of support and by its own stiffness as it cools. At 10 mm/s (the factory value) the plastic has time to harden almost as soon as it leaves the nozzle.
Lines that hang exactly 100% (nothing underneath) don't count here: they use the speed of the “100%” range.
When to change it
- The usual choice: leave it at 10 mm/s.
- A figure with lots of extreme overhangs, like a dragon with open wings, where the print time shoots up: raise it to 20 mm/s and accept some roughness, or add supports.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| 10 | Defaultdefault |
| 20 | Faster; somewhat worse overhangs |
Watch out for
- An overhang steeper than 60° almost always comes out better with supports than with any speed.
