Smooth wall speed between layers

Keeps the outer wall speed from jumping from one layer to the next. It gets rid of shiny bands on tall parts with smooth surfaces. It's experimental.

Greyed out (you can see it but not change it) unless “Spiral vase” is off. See Spiral vase.

How it works

When a part gets narrower toward the top, the upper layers are short and the printer slows them down so they have time to cool. That slowdown happens from one layer to the next, and the speed change shows up as a shinier or duller horizontal band on the wall.

With this option, the program compares the outer wall speed between neighboring layers and smooths it so it changes gradually. In the program it's called “Smoothing wall speed along Z(experimental)”.

When to change it

  • A decorative vase, a bottle or a display figurine printed in silk, shiny or translucent filament, with tall, smooth walls: turn it on.
  • A part that already came out with horizontal bands of different shine: this is exactly what it's for.
  • A cube, a small part or a quick prototype: it's not worth it.

Watch out for

  • It increases print time and also how long the program takes to slice; that's annoying while you're running tests.
  • On parts where the outer wall is broken up (lots of separate columns, holes) the effect is minimal.
  • It doesn't work in spiral vase mode.

Smoothing outwall speed in z direction to get better surface quality. Print time will increases. This does not work on spiral vase mode.

Helps with

Using another slicer? Look for the idea, not the name: in Orca Slicer almost everything has the same name; in PrusaSlicer or Cura it may be called something else, or not exist.
