Infill/wall overlap
How far the infill lines reach into the inner wall so they stick to it firmly. Too little and the infill sits loose inside; too much and the wall bulges.
How it works
Walls and infill are printed separately. If the infill stopped exactly where the wall begins, they would barely touch and the part would be a shell with a loose block inside. That's why the slicer stretches each infill line a little into the inner wall: that way they fuse together.
The value is a percentage of the infill line width: 15% of 0.45 mm is about 0.07 mm. Here “infill” means everything horizontal: sparse infill, internal solid infill, top and bottom surfaces, and bridges.
It can be set to a negative number: then the infill stops short and leaves a gap next to the wall.
When to change it
- Almost never; 15% works in most cases.
- A box with a flat lid where you can see a groove between the lid surface and the wall: raise it to 20 or 25%.
- A vase or figure in shiny filament with bumps or “ribs” on the outer wall, right where each infill line ends: lower it to 10%.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| -50% | Half-line gap; only for experimenting |
| 10% | Less marking on the outer wall |
| 15% | Defaultdefault |
| 25% | Stronger bond; may mark the wall |
Watch out for
- A high overlap pushes plastic against the wall: it shows most on parts with 2 walls and in shiny filaments.
- A negative overlap also affects the top and bottom layers, which are no longer joined to the wall.
- If the infill “ribs” show on the wall, raise “Wall loops” before lowering the overlap: with 3 walls they no longer show through.
