Z overrides X/Y
Right under an overhang (a part of the model in the air), it lets the support get as close as the vertical gap allows, even if that cuts into the horizontal margin.
How it works
An overhang sticking out of a wall forms a corner where the part in the air meets the wall. With the normal horizontal distance, the support stays 0.35 mm away from the wall, and the strip of the overhang against the wall is printed with nothing underneath.
With this box checked, the “Top Z distance” takes over under the overhang: the support reaches the wall (leaving only the vertical gap) and holds up the whole overhang. In exchange, it may mark the wall in that area.
When to change it
- For almost anything: off, as it comes by default.
- The eave of a model house's roof droops right where it meets the wall: turn it on.
- A box or a vase whose walls have to come out flawless: leave it off.
Typical values
| Value | What for |
|---|---|
| Off | XY distance rules; defaultdefault |
| On | Z rules under the overhang |
Watch out for
- It only changes what happens under overhangs; on the rest of the wall, “Support/object xy distance” still rules.
- Bambu recommends turning it on only with the “Tree Hybrid” support style.

What Bambu Studio says
When top z distance overrides support/object xy distance, give priority to ensuring that supports are generated beneath overhangs, and a gap of the same size as top z distance is leaved with the model. Whereas in the opposite case, the gap between supports and the model follows support/object xy distance all the time. Only recommended to enable when using HybridTree.
